do you read lichen?

The words have faded away, or else this sign was simply written in lichen. “Can you read lichen?” I asked the open field. There were crows to the left and a hawk to the right; no one answered. I took a photo and was about to move on when a round-faced, wide-eyed boy came running up, glancing behind him as he ran. He slipped between and beneath the briar canes and halted, panting, beside me. He was followed by a long-legged, red-haired girl, who cleared the briars with a leap. The boy shrank against me, and the girl laughed.

“The sign says ‘Danger,’” whispered the boy.

“Oh, it does not,” the girl said scornfully. “The sign once said ‘No trespassing’; people put it here. But the wind and the rain scoured away that old message, and the lichens grew—they graffitied right across it—and they’re saying, ‘The one who speaks of trespass commits the act.’” The girl paused a moment, then remarked, “The things that spring up out of the earth are always stronger than things made by human hands. The lichens aren’t saying that, but it’s true.”

A freight train whistle wailed; I could hear the sound of the engine.

“The lichens say ‘Danger! Here be dragons!” the boy said, shivering, and then he dashed toward the tracks and across them, zigzagging, and as he did, he turned into a rabbit.

“I’m still coming for you,” the girl said, running her tongue along her lips, and then she gave chase, becoming, as she crossed the tracks, a fox. And then the dragon came, scaly black, and roaring.

Beautiful post. Gotta love it.

I remember once when I could read the runes bark worms write on the inside of trees. It's been a while though since I've read any. I'm afraid I'm a little bit rusty.

Yay! That's the best thing--to be able to share the ideas with people who enjoy them.

The train tracks pass over the nearby road; there's a railroad bridge for them. I had just decided against walking on the tracks to cross the road when I heard the train whistle, and then the train came. I would have made it across before the train arrived, but all the same, it felt retroactively like the right decision.

Oh, god, that ending!!! That was great.

The blue eye in the golden face, however, really freaks me out for some reason. I think the idea that the field is a face.

Oh, lovely! If I was a rabbit and a fox chased me, I'd become a human and never go back (at least till the fox was gone). I wonder if that's against the rules?

From: [identity profile] asakiyume.livejournal.com
It might be hard to maintain a human form? Take a lot of concentration or something. (Did you ever see Miyazaki's Pom Poko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pom_Poko)? The foxes and tanuki ("racoon dogs") can turn into people, but when they get tired, they collapse back into their true forms.)

I suspect this particular rabbit got spooked by the train whistle. Sort of like when grouse or other game birds fly up in the air and thereby make themselves vulnerable to being shot--whereas if they could just bear with the tension and sit tight, the hunters would never find them.

Hee, glad you liked that line. It just struck me as so true that the person who goes around sticking up posted and no-trespassing signs is the biggest trespasser on, y'know, the inviolability of the earth (to be polysyllabic about it...)

In my environment 100 class we had a discussion today about ways of viewing the world, especially in relation to animals. Parts of the discussion reminded me of this post. So I was wondering if I could copy this piece into the internet chat area we use for class and link back to here. (Or if you'd rather me just link and not copy.)
